An Oneida County based "stop fracking before it starts" organization.
Hydro Relief Web, together with grassroots organizations from around the state aims at stopping this environmentally disastrous practice before it can wreck the water, air and soil of our state. It serves as a mobilizing agent, bringing citizens together who are willing to see the goal of a ban on hydrofracking to its conclusion. The organizers of HRW are veteran activists and have been involved in this issue (in New York's Southern Tier) since 2008.
HRW is a member of the Coalition to Protect New York.
Our approach takes three tracks. The first is at the local level: working for true grassroots mobilization, sponsoring public educational forums on the fracking issue. The second is working with municipalities to design ordinances that will protect their water, air, soil and of course - people and animals. These ordinances are at the fringe of (but within) the legal system in New York and are meant, in part, to demonstrate the resolve of local peoples to protect themselves. The third track is working to lobby Albany so that a state-wide ban may be driven into law - a more daunting task given the tremendous power and influence of the drilling and chemical lobbies in our state capitol - but one we are not willing to concede.
We are of course aware that this is a divisive issue, in part because the monetary rewards of fracking can be astronomical for both drilling companies and landowners - at least in the short term, before the "accumulated effects" of drilling start to kick in. That's why we hope to engage pro-drilling landowners in civil conversation on the issue and hope that they can give sincere consideration to landowners from other states where the practice of fracking is far more advanced. In case after case, these landowners felt and believed just as so many New York pro-drilling landowners do now - that it's a great opportunity, and that the risks can be mitigated through "regulation". Now, many of these same individuals have dedicated a large part of their life to touring others states such as ours, with the message "don't make the mistake I did - keep those drillers out of your beautiful state."
